The term "soft skills" has been used since the late 1960s, when it initially emerged in the military context. It was first used by the U.S. Army to describe non-technical skills that involved working with people, such as leadership, communication, and decision-making, which complemented "hard skills" like technical knowledge and proficiency with machinery or tools.
Today, the term describes a wide range of non-technical skills that involve working with people, such as leadership, communication, collaboration, time management, emotional intelligence, adaptability, inclusivity, decision-making, etc.
Over the past several years, the term “soft skills” has been criticized as implying that these skills are less significant, secondary, optional, or less critical than "hard skills" (technical or job-specific knowledge). For this very reason, In 2023, Angela stopped using the term soft skills and recoined the term Power Skills, asserting that changing the term "soft skills" to "power skills" represents a shift in how these abilities are perceived and valued.
Angela chose the term Power Skills to emphasize their critical importance, strength, and value in the workplace. The term moves away from perceiving "soft skills" as secondary or less necessary, highlighting their vital role in driving performance, leadership, collaboration, team dynamics, professional growth, and organizational success.
The importance of Power Skills has grown significantly in modern work environments. Power skills are dynamic in that they are transferable across all professions and foundational to achieving personal and professional excellence. They are also highly sought after by employers who understand their importance to organizational success.
Meeting with you to discuss your organizational or coaching needs would be an honor.
